In a press release issued on January 31, 2013, Minnesota’s Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office announced the launching of its Online Warrant Search (OWS). This web-based application was designed to allow citizens, crime victims, community members, and partner organizations to search for and view public information about people who have active Ramsey County arrest warrants.
“The Online Warrant Search should help improve community safety by providing arrest warrant information online and encouraging citizens to share knowledge with law enforcement,” said Sheriff Matt Bostrom. “An informed and engaged community is central to public safety.”
An arrest warrant calls for the immediate apprehension and arrest of a person and is issued by a District Court Judge. Arrest warrants are issued for serious crimes such as murder, robbery, and sexual assault, or when someone presents a flight risk, cannot be located, or lives out of state. Arrest warrants are also issued for less serious crime such as a traffic violation or disorderly conduct, or when someone fails to follow an order of the Court. The Sheriff’s Office does not issue warrants but is required by state statute for processing and maintaining warrant data.
The OWS displays public information regarding individuals with active arrest warrants issued by Ramsey County District Court (Second Judicial District) within the last ten years. Using the system is very simple; just type in a first and last name into the search field. If a name is found, results include a photo, full name, age, physical description, aliases, warrant type (bench, complaint, or probation/parole violation), warrant number, date the warrant was issued, charges, charge level (felony or misdemeanor), statute number, as well as court and bail information.
The OWS should be an effective tool to keep the community safe, hold offenders accountable, and ensure justice. Anyone wishing to contact the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office regarding a wanted person can do so anonymously by using the Confidential Web Tip Information System. If you have an arrest warrant and would like to learn more about warrants and view instructions on how to turn yourself in or post bail, visit the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Resolving Your Arrest Warrant page.
